Yep, I’m dedicating a whole page on the site to garlic at the moment since it’s the only thing that’s in the ground so far. I planted it towards the end of November and even though it’s been cold and snowy recently, there are several shoots appearing.
All the greenery that you see in the background and might be mistake for weeds are in fact nitrogen fixing plants, which I sowed as seeds in November. The idea is that you grow them in soil that you are going to be using for growing vegetables until just before they’re about to flower and then dig them into the ground with the hope that they’ll improve the quality of the soil.

And this picture below was taken about a month later at the beginning of February. So, even though it’s been cold and snowy still, the garlic is slowing growing.
It’s now mid February and the garlic is coming on well. There has been a fair bit of rain recently so you can see that the ground is very wet and with the heavy clay soil that we have it’s pretty muddy at the moment.
And now it’s May and the garlic has grown frantically in the last few months. It should only be about another month till it’s ready to harvest and we’ll have our first crop from the garden!
Well, it took slightly longer than I’d though, but this evening in early July I dug up the garlic. The bulbs are rather small, but they certainly smell like garlic, so perhaps they’ll make up for in flavour what they lack in size.
